Acoustic Systems
Buildings conduct sound through the fabric of walls and floors. Sound can also travel through gaps in the building fabric; unwanted sound transmission either within or between dwellings can become a nuisance, cause stress and impair residents' quality of life.
Building Regulations require provision to be made to reduce the transmission of sound between dwellings (see Regulation E2 and E3). Advice on meeting the regulations is contained in Approved Document E. Guidance is also contained in the BRE Digest 347 'Sound insulation of separating walls and floors'.
According to CIRIA report 127 a quiet room for either study or noisy activities is now frequently regarded as a desirable feature for many dwelling types.
